Anjara & Tell Mar Elias

Two Christian pilgrimage sites in the Ajloun hills: the shrine of Our Lady of the Mountain and the hill of the Prophet Elijah.

Tradition says that Jesus, Mary and the disciples rested in a cave at Anjara on their way through the region. The Catholic shrine of Our Lady of the Mountain is one of the official pilgrimage sites of Jordan.

Tell Mar Elias stands above Listib, believed to be Tishbe, the home of the Prophet Elijah. The ruins of a large Byzantine church with coloured mosaic floors sit under old oak trees with a view to the Jordan Valley.
