A hilltop castle built by a commander of Saladin, surrounded by the greenest forests in Jordan.

Qal'at ar-Rabad was built in 1184–85 by Izz al-Din Usama, a commander of Saladin, to watch over the Jordan Valley, protect the iron mines of Ajloun and pass signals by fire and pigeon towards Damascus. Its towers, moat and vaulted halls are well preserved.

Below the castle, the Ajloun Forest Reserve protects oak, pistachio and strawberry-tree woodland with easy marked trails, village homestays and small crafts workshops.
