According to the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses saw the Promised Land from Mount Nebo before he died. Byzantine monks built a church here in the 4th century; today's Memorial Church of Moses, restored by the Franciscans and reopened in 2016, protects superb mosaic floors of hunters, shepherds and animals.
From the terrace next to the Brazen Serpent sculpture you look across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea to Jericho and, on clear days, to the towers of Jerusalem.
