Over 2,000 years ago the Nabataeans grew rich on the incense trade and carved their capital into the sandstone mountains. You enter through the Siq, a 1.2 km canyon whose walls close in overhead, until the Treasury (Al-Khazneh) appears in a slice of light – one of the great moments of travel.

Beyond it lie the Street of Facades, the theatre, the Royal Tombs, the colonnaded street and the Great Temple. About 850 rock-cut steps lead up to the Monastery (Ad-Deir), even larger than the Treasury, and trails climb to the High Place of Sacrifice and viewpoints above the Treasury. Five nights a week (Sunday to Thursday) the Siq and Treasury are lit by hundreds of candles for Petra by Night.
