When Christian families resettled Madaba in the 1880s they found mosaic floors under almost every house. The most famous is the Madaba Map, laid around AD 560: the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land, with Jerusalem, the Dead Sea with fish swimming away from its salt, and the Nile delta.

The Archaeological Park, the Church of the Apostles and a mosaic school where young artisans still work stone by stone make Madaba a relaxed first or last stop close to the airport.
