Amman was Rabbath Ammon of the Ammonites and Philadelphia of the Romans. On Jabal al-Qal'a, the Citadel, the columns of the Temple of Hercules stand beside the Umayyad Palace, with the whole city spread below.
Downtown (Al-Balad), the Roman Theatre seats 6,000 people. Around it are spice and gold souks, falafel stands, kunafa shops and the King Hussein Mosque. Rainbow Street and Jabal al-Weibdeh add galleries, rooftop cafés and old villas, and the Jordan Museum tells the country's story from the 9,000-year-old statues of Ain Ghazal onwards.
