Qasr al-Abd was built in the 2nd century BC by Hyrcanus of the Tobiad family. Huge blocks, some weighing over 20 tonnes, are carved with lions and eagles. The palace stood in an artificial lake and was never finished.
On the way, the caves of Iraq al-Amir ("cliffs of the prince") show ancient Aramaic inscriptions, and the village women's cooperative makes paper, pottery and embroidery you can buy directly.
