Built from the 1140s, Kerak controlled the caravan route between Damascus, Egypt and the Hijaz. Its most infamous lord, Raynald of Châtillon, attacked pilgrim caravans until Saladin besieged the castle; it finally fell to the Ayyubids in 1188.
Today you explore long vaulted halls, dark passageways, the Mamluk palace and a small museum, with views down to the Dead Sea valley.
